"Muscular Dystrophy Week" is marked

The Organization of People with Muscular Dystrophy of Kosovo (OPDMK) together with EC Ma Ndryshe has marked "Muscular Dystrophy Week" with a series of activities in Prizren. On this occasion, the challenges and demands of people with muscular dystrophy have been highlighted, both before state institutions and society as a whole.
The activities, in which the guests from Ferizaj and Suhareka also participated, began with the placement of posters with awareness messages for the public, to highlight the daily obstacles faced by People with Disabilities.
Then, in front of the Municipal Administration, the performance "Assembly Office of OPDMK" was performed, through which OPDMK's urgent request for a day care center in Prizren for PWD over 16 years of age was repeated.
The activity in front of the Center of Pensions and Social Security has highlighted the existing barriers in the buildings of public institutions, as People with Disabilities from the Prizren region are users of the services of this center, but do not have proper access.
On Thursday, the parade was also held with the PWDs, starting from the “Beledija” building to the “Lidhja” Square. Each wheelchair participant carried awareness messages.
In order to raise the voice for the many injustices and barriers in their daily life, the performance "Wheelchairs in a cage" was conceived. Four wheelchairs placed in cages in “Shadërvan”, “Kej”, “Lidhja” Square and on "Adem Jashari" street conveyed the message to the public about the need to respect the rights of PWDs.
The public performance "Stopping Prejudices" was also held at the “Lidhja” Square, where, in addition to the first act about prejudices in society, challenges in access and barriers in infrastructure were also addressed; then Education for children and people with disabilities, and Employment of people with disabilities.
The performance was supported by the volunteers and the group of women in politics of the Municipality of Prizren and concluded with the slogan of women with disabilities "We are visible and proud".
Next, through the "Coffee for all" activity, the lack of access to public spaces in the city center was expressed. Here PWDs have expressed the standpoint that they want equal treatment.
The other activity was carried out in Shadërvan, where the Map of Barriers was unveiled. This map has been updated since 2016. All identified barriers are marked there. At the same time, it was emphasized that the situation in terms of barriers has not marked proper progress.
The conclusion of the "Dystrophy Week" was made in “Kej” by showing awareness and motivational videos, where PWDs are included.
"Dystrophy Week" began to be observed for the first time in 2012 and since then is observed every year in the third week of May. Through the activities in this week, it is intended to increase public awareness of the rights of People with Disabilities, as well as the commitment to ensure equal opportunities for them.
