Consultative Meeting with Stakeholders on River Basin Management Challenges Held in Suhareka

EC Ma Ndryshe organized a consultative meeting with citizens, representatives of local institutions, as well as farmers and fishermen from the Municipality of Suhareka, to discuss the challenges related to the management of river basins in this municipality.

The meeting created an opportunity for an open discussion on the current state of the rivers, with a focus on environmental and biodiversity aspects. On this occasion, participants shared their concerns and experiences, and presented ideas and recommendations for improving the management of water resources at the local level.

According to the community, one of the main concerns in the Municipality of Suhareka is flooding, which, based on participants’ experiences, is also linked to the narrowing of riverbeds as a result of construction activities and the dumping of construction materials into rivers. Problems related to the discharge of wastewater into rivers were also highlighted, along with the lack of functional treatment plants and difficulties with the supply of drinking water in some areas of the municipality.

Several measures were proposed to address these challenges, including the regular cleaning and maintenance of riverbeds, the construction of wastewater treatment plants, as well as the construction of a dam and the creation of an artificial lake in the Dragaqina area, which could serve for irrigation and drinking water supply.

This activity aims to bring institutions and the local community closer together by encouraging cooperation and concrete actions for the protection and improved management of aquatic ecosystems in the Municipality of Suhareka.
